Down and Derby

"Be Fast... or Look Good Trying"
The pinewood derby is one of the most popular and successful family activities in Cub Scouting. Pinewood derby cars are small wooden models that Cub Scouts make with help from their families. Then they race the cars in competition. The cars are powered by gravity and run down a track. Every boy can design and build his own "grand prix" car to enter in the race.

Race Day - Saturday, March 4th, 2017
The Derby will be held at Chancellor Charter School.  Weigh-ins start at 2 PM, racing starts at 3 PM prompt.  There will be drinks, hot-dogs and snacks provided by the Webelos 1. The profits from the concession sales help pay for the Webeos CrossOver party! This is a family event so bring the grandparents, uncles, cousins, and anyone else who might enjoy a good race.

There are 3 different Groups:
1) Cub Scouts - Every rank races in their own division (Tigers, Wolfs, Bears & Webelos)
2)
Alumni & Adults (AoL will race as Alumni)
3) Siblings

We have a two lane track. Each racer will race once down each side of the track. His fastest time between the two races will be kept. Races are timed down to the .000 second. The top three times from each rank will race in the Grand Finale.

Pack 241 Pinewood Derby "Approximate" Schedule
Depending on how many scouts show up to race, times can run faster or possibly slower than what is posted. Show up check in and enjoy the show! Plan to stick around after the race to help clean up. Many hands make for light work and EVERYONE is expected to do their part before they leave.

Derby Workshops
There will be several opportunities to mold and shape the block of pinewood into a lean / mean well-decorated racing machine. The boys are not permitted to use power tools but they are encouraged to design the shape of their cars, sand them, and decorate them accordinglyDecorating the car is completely up to the imagination of the scout.
Parents are encouraged to assist their scout, but they should let the scout do most of the work. There will be (2) workshop and yes, scouts can work on their cars at home as well. The workshops are designed so scouts can pick a design or if they have a design already, get their cars cut. Cars will be available for sell starting in December. The cost is $5.00. You may also purchase directly from the Scout Shop along with decals. Only items with the BSA logo can be used if purchased online or at Michael's.

A Pinewood Derby Car Is Born

How to Build an Unbeatable Pinewood Derby Racer

Equal Ground
All entries in the derby will start with the "Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit" which includes the body, 4 axles, and 4 wheels.  All nine pieces MUST be used before the car can race. Cars may not exceed 5 ounces in weight and must conform to certain size restrictions and specifications.  The complete set of rules will be available at the Derby Workshops, Form & Flyers section of the website and below. The kits are sold at the local Scout Shop, online and will also be sold by the pack at meetings and the derby workshops. If you purchase parts from Michael's Crafts or other hobby shops, they must have the official BSA Logo. When viewing online templates, we follow the standard BSA wheel base. Scouts will not be able to drill holes for extended wheel bases. (See Melissa). The kit cost $5.00.
